By: Mariana Ruiz de Streuhofer, UMBC Cybersecurity Master’s Student at USG
When I began my Master’s in Cybersecurity at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), I had a clear vision: to expand my technical expertise, gain leadership experience, and build a network that would support my professional growth. What I didn’t expect was how deeply the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) would shape my journey, opening doors to mentorship, leadership, and professional opportunities that have exceeded my expectations.
As an international student with a background in business and cybersecurity, I’ve always sought environments that foster collaboration and professional development. USG has been exactly that—a place where passionate students, faculty, and industry leaders come together to create meaningful connections.
The Power of Networking at USG
One of the biggest advantages of being part of USG is the networking opportunities. Through events, student organizations, and faculty mentorship, I’ve been able to expand my reach beyond the classroom. Some of my most rewarding experiences include:
- Becoming a USG Student Ambassador, which has allowed me to connect with prospective students, share my journey, and help others navigate their own paths at USG.
- Serving as the Treasurer of the USG Student Council, where I advocate for students and help drive initiatives that enhance our campus experience.
- Securing leadership roles in professional organizations, such as serving as Secretary on the Organizing Committee for the IEEE Women in Engineering Forum USA East 2025 — an opportunity I never would have imagined when I first started my degree.
- Mentoring others through programs like Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) and the WiSTEM2D Alumni Alliance Mentorship Program, where I support aspiring professionals in STEM and cybersecurity.
These opportunities didn’t just happen—they were the result of USG’s strong community, professional development resources, and the power of networking.
Attending events, engaging with faculty and peers, and saying yes to new experiences have all played a crucial role in my success.
A Career Milestone: Being Recognized as One of the Most Inspiring Women in Cyber
Beyond my experiences at USG, I am beyond thrilled to share that I’ve been shortlisted for the Most Inspiring Women in Cyber Awards 2025! 🎉 This recognition is incredibly meaningful, especially in a field where women are underrepresented. I’m deeply grateful for the mentors and peers who have supported me along the way.

The event was held at the iconic BT Tower in London on February 26, 2025, and celebrated the incredible women who are breaking barriers in cybersecurity. I was thrilled to be part of it!
