Guest Post: Rachel Wolohan, OSS Senior Coordinator

Someone introduced me the other day as, “This is Rachel…she’s famous for the student events on campus.” I’ve been working at USG for a little over 3 years and I’ve fallen in love with event planning! If my “claim to fame” is for the events I coordinate, I’m okay with that label. My event planning duties coincide with working with the student organizations on campus and helping them execute their events at USG.

About 2 years ago, the Office of Student Services (OSS) implemented Connect@USG as the student life online portal on campus in order to organize and empower the student organizations on campus. Connect@USG hosts all organizations’ forms and documents, rosters, pictures, budgets, etc. The portal has also become a place for student organizations as well as campus departments to promote their events on campus.

Recently, Connect@USG received a much needed update and facelift! The new design is modern, easy to navigate, and accessible. Earlier this year, the free Corq mobile app became available for download. The app shows a list of events happening on the campus. You should download it right now so you are always in the know. With the recent update to Connect@USG, students and staff can fill out any forms and learn about events all on their phone or tablet.

Check out our new Opportunity Wall (pictured below) and see how you can get involved. The Opportunity Wall shows the event details on campus. You can even add the event to your Google or Outlook calendar with just a click of a button. It has never been easier to get involved with an organization, it is literally in the palm of your hand. OSS and student organizations are working hard to plan a fun and engaging semester filled with events.Opportunity-WallMark your calendars now for #USGFEST being held on Wednesday, September 16th from 2-4pm. The Student Event Board, USG Student Council, and OSS will have inflatables and snacks along with special guests from Hot 99.5. USG has about 50 student organizations on campus and many will be at #USGFEST with activities and membership information. USG Spirit Day will also be on that same day. Make sure to wear your school’s spirit gear to #USGFEST and get a special gift. Those that are most spirited will be entered in to win other prizes.

Rachel Wolohan serves as a Coordinator in the Office of Student Services at USG. An Eastern Shore native, Rachel earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Longwood University and is currently earning her Master’s degree in Management with a specialization in Marketing from the University of Maryland University College. When Rachel’s not running half marathons, she’s running logistics to help student organizations on campus. Rachel oversees student life events, financial aid, Connect@USG, and new student orientation. Want to start a club on campus or need financial aid assistance? Stop by the Office of Student Services and talk to Rachel during walk in hours for help with any questions.

Guest Post: Rachel Carstens, CAS Coordinator

Greetings from Colorado!

I’m writing from Rocky Mountain National Park, where night came early to the mountains. I am about to embark on a 4 day (5 if things don’t go well) 30 mile, 12,650 feet above sea-level backpacking route. It’s a big step for me in many ways: I’ve never been so far west; I have never gone on an extended overnight hiking trip; and I haven’t pushed my body like this since before a major illness and long recovery in 2010.

I recently finished co-teaching a GRE Summer Prep Series at USG–which was a huge success due to hosting the series in USG’s new Active Learning Classroom. When I return from my hiking trip the Fall semester will be upon us, my first as staff and student at USG. This Fall I will begin the part-time night MBA through the University of Maryland Smith School of Business, my second graduate degree from UMCP. This is actually a theme in our office. Many of us are perpetual educators and students. I sometimes joke that I’m collecting all the degrees. In a way, it keeps the student experience, and our capacity to empathize, relevant. In others, it shows how deeply invested we are in personal and community growth.

Active Learning Classroom

Active Learning Classroom in action!

I came to the Center for Academic Success (CAS) while teaching as an adjunct at UMCP and quickly found the luxury of working one-on-one and in group settings without the burden of assigning grades formative to my personal pedagogy. Academic support at CAS is really an exceptional model for students and staff alike, with our opportunity to share and learn. Most of the time, I think students don’t realize just how much we learn from them, not only in course content, but in how to teach and how to speak in a way that has meaning and significance in advanced applied linguistics. It’s easy to be excited about those interactions, and as excited and nervous as I am for my next couple days away, I am equally excited for all that lays ahead.

Rachel CarstensRachel Carstens received her MFA from the University of Maryland’s Creative Writing Program. Rachel is an accomplished poet and creative writer who brings her years of experience with language and structure to bear when helping students to strengthen the clarity and cohesion of their work. Rachel was previously an adjunct instructor with the UMCP English Department, where she taught Composition and Creative Writing courses. Her writing has appeared in The Atlas Review, JMWW, From the Cat Bird Seat, and she was featured in the 2015 Our City Festival in Washington, D.C.

Campus Kitchens Proclamation

On May 4th, Councilmembers Sidney Katz and Craig Rice presented a proclamation to students enrolled in UMES’s Hospitality & Tourism Management/Campus Kitchens program at USG. The UMES/USG Campus Kitchen Project (CKP) helps feed Montgomery County residents.

The proclamation was a result of the students raising over $5000 in the National Raise the Dough Campaign. CKP teams around the nation competed against each other and the small UMES/USG team won CK-Group-Picthe award for “Most Donors” and finished fourth overall for funds raised.

Faculty Focus: Val Sharpe

Val Sharpe came from a family of teachers, so it was only natural that she would become a teacher herself. She graduated from Hood College in 1976 with a degree in Early Elementary/Special Education. She spent 17 years teaching in Baltimore County, before becoming an adjunct professor at her alma mater, Hood College. Through the years she worked in various positions, and then retired from Hood College, only to be contacted for a position at Towson University. Little did she know that the position was actually located at The Universities at Shady Grove (USG). Upon stepping foot on the USG campus, she knew this was a place she wanted to be, and promptly accepted the position as program director and faculty member for the Early Education/Special Education program (EESE) at Towson University at USG.

In her five years at USG, Val has become well-known as being a dedicated leader who goes above and beyond to support her students academically, emotionally, and professionally. As the program director, she arranges all of the internship placements and serves as the liaison at seven different schools around the county. She is an advisor for the student Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) at USG and brings students to the CEC convention every year, including this year where she was a presenter. Recently, Val was honored with the Kendall Service Award for Outstanding Program Director, for which she was nominated by her students and peers.

Every day she serves her students, the program, Towson University and USG in an exemplary fashion, with her palpable love of teaching children, professional connections, positive and caring attitude and warm smile. This is why Val Sharpe is the featured faculty member for the spring 2015 Faculty Focus.
